From the first serve to match point

How to play soccer tennis in Potrero

A little practice. An opponent. A ball you don’t want to drop.

Start with a quick match

Choose Quick match to play against the CPU without an account. Open Practice for the tutorial or free training. Potrero runs in your browser with nothing to install.

Move, aim and return

On keyboard, use WASD or the arrow keys to move and aim, K to strike, and Space to jump. Hold K to prepare a shot and release to strike; a short tap gives more control. L lets you head the ball down. On a phone, use the movement control and strike and jump buttons. Turn your phone sideways for gameplay.

Serve into the diagonal box

Aim your serve at the opposite diagonal service box. Hold the strike control and release to serve. An invalid first serve gives you a second attempt; a double fault awards the point to your opponent. Follow the service prompt on screen.

Win the rally

Send the ball over the net and into the other half of the court. You can use up to three touches and allow one bounce on your side before returning. A ball out of bounds, a ball hitting the scenery, or exceeding the bounce or touch limit is a fault. A player touching the net is also a fault. A serve that clips the net and lands in the correct box is replayed without losing an attempt. The on-screen call explains each fault.

First to seven, win by two

Quick matches and private matches use one game to seven points, win by two. Practice settings also offer a competitive format: sets to eleven, best of three. These are Potrero’s rules; other soccer tennis games may use different formats.
